Shoutout to Dario Argento for the lighting inspiration

Kristen is the queen of lighting. So when she told me to point this light that way, that light this way; I did it without hesitating. My arms hurt a little from holding up all those lights though. But it is worth it in the end, considering how lovely it looks. My last post exemplifies just how beautiful it came out.

Our main inspiration for the lighting was a film called Suspiria (1977). "The lighting is inexplicable, completely unrealistic, and in many scenes there’s absolutely no source for the light, nowhere it could be coming from. But it’s beautiful," an article says. That was our goal. To make something beautiful. So we did it. We went to the hardware store and bought colorful lights. And we made it happen.

I am so excited to see the final product.

MORE Behind the scenes ;)

We filmed more on Monday! For 8 hours straight! And still had to wake up for school at 6 in the morning the next day! Kill me!
Anyways back to our regularly scheduled programming, here are some behind the scenes shots from our Monday shoot:
Some of our witch's witch stuff. God, we're so good.

More witch stuff. Wow we really did that. Queens of props.

Hello ladies

I've been in Texas the past few days! I'm having a really good time and it's so nice to have a break after that stressful filming day on Wednesday. I believe right now Zoe is editing the footage we have so far. I'm really excited for the outcome :)
I'm not sure when we will film again but I hope it's soon. I want to get it done so Zoe has enough time to edit. I know how long the process can take, and how stressful it can be. So I want to make this as easy on her as possible.
Hopefully, everything goes smoothly. I know our video will be beautiful. Both Kristen and I have the eye and techniques to get lovely footage, Zoe has her beautitul editing skills, and our actress Berni is phenomenal! I feel so confident in this!!

Behind the Scenes!!!!

Filming at my Tia Lelis' house was a lot of fun. Her house had an old-timey vibe, which was perfect for what we were trying to do. However, my Tia likes to keep her house at 584585496 degrees, so we were sweating all over the place. Anyways, here are some behind the scenes photos, as promised. :)

The lovely Berni, our housewife witch, preparing to film the scene where she comes back home from grocery shopping.

Kristen filming. She had her cap on sideways to cover her eyes from the sun. "This is how art is made," she told me.

 A cutie on camera.

Guys I am in love with Kristen. So beautiful and radiant!!!!! Look at her go!!!

 Me with the star <3

And here is when I realized we chose the perfect person to play our evil 50s housewife witch. Wow.

Nervous???

Getting this project done is stressing me out. I will be gone this weekend and both Kristen and I will be gone the next. We decided it would be best to work on school days, which isn't ideal, but it gets the job done.
So after school yesterday, we filmed. We went to my aunt's house in Kendall which is an hour away. It took us hours to get just the beginning part of our opening shot. We finished around 9 and got home at 10:30. On a school night. Some of us still had homework. Oh well. I guess this shows how dedicated we are to this project, and how much we enjoy this class. My next post will be some behind the scenes photos so stay tuned!

How thrift shopping saved my life

We chose our setting to be in the 1950s era, which can be hard to recreate (especially since we're living in 2017 and everything is modern now). So we had one question, and one question only:

HOW THE HELL ARE WE GONNA DO THIS

After shedding a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, we finally find a solution: thrift shopping. So after school Friday, we headed straight to a great store that was about 30 minutes away.*

* (Do you know how much gas I had to waste on that trip. 30 minutes there and back. And I had to drop everybody off at their houses. This is all for you, Cambridge.)

We ended up finding a dress, an apron, and some trinkets that look pretty 50s-ish. Pots, candles, and other things were also purchased to add to the Witch Experience™. Some of the items we bought. The old-fashioned items are in a pot we plan to use for witching purposes, along with a candle and other pots.

 A candle we found.

All in all, it was a successful trip to the thrift store. Now we have a good amount of items to help give off 50s witch vibes and we didn't even have to spend that much! And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how thrift shopping saved my life.

Script? Kind of

Zoe began working a bit on our script the other day. Here is a snippet of it:

I am beyond excited to work on this. Kristen, Zoe, and I make a great team so I know this will end up being beautiful.

Schedule

Today in class we established our schedule for the next few weeks. It's kind of scary that it's over in just 5 weeks, but I'm excited.
I'm so glad we got Bernie and Nate on board. Bernie fits our vision perfectly, and Nate is wonderful in anything he is in. Honestly it wasn't that hard to get Nate to help us out. In class today, Zoe and I shouted "Nate! Wanna be in our project?" across the room, to which Nate replied, "Yeah!......Wait what are you guys doing?" What a cutie. I love him so much.
Hopefully, though, I can get my aunt to agree to let us film in her house in Miami. She'll probably say yes but I'm still slightly worried.
Anyways, here is our schedule for the next FIVE WEEKS:

Not to be corny but: The Lover's Revenge

So when the idea of a torture scene came up, I was hoping for something like Hostel (2005) or maybe Goodnight Mommy (2014). But I think that's a little much. So we're gonna just do something with a finger or an eye probably. Lame, but it gets the job done.
With that being said, it might seem like our genre is basically horror, but it is technically dark-fantasy. Dark-fantasy, described by Charles L. Grant, is "a type of horror story in which humanity is threatened by forces beyond human understanding". This, in essence, is basically supernatural horror. What differentiates supernatural horror from horror is that it is centered around events/beings that are believed to be fictional. For example, a story about a serial killer is horror (because it is realistic), while a story about a ghost would be supernatural horror.
Witches definitely fall under the category of supernatural horror. Some witches are not inherently evil, according to Wikipedia, and that is what we are basing our character off of. It might seem strange that she is torturing someone if she is not evil, but there is a "method to our madness" as the kids say these days.
As of now, we are going through with "The Revenge Plot", which is exactly what it sounds like. The Writing Studio site says it is "retaliation by the protagonist against the antagonist for real or imagined injury."
Our main character is an immortal witch, of course. She had a lover back when the Salem Trials of 1692 were happening and many women were being executed solely because someone said they were a witch. Her lover was a beautiful woman, who just so happened to have a husband. Eventually, the husband found out about their affair and told the Church his wife was a witch. Soon after, she was executed, and to this day, our protagonist seeks out men who looks like the husband and tortures them. Thus, it is retaliation by the protagonist against (lookalikes of) the antagonist for an injury, as the definition states.
The background story for the revenge isn't concrete, however. This is just my idea for it, and I hope my partners like it enough to stick with it because I know I do. Cute homosexual witch seeking revenge for her lover? Sign me up.

I trust her

One day I was sitting in Astronomy taking notes, and then something my teacher had said caught my attention. He was talking about the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, which is a, well, very large array of satellites that pick up radio waves. They are sometimes used to help the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence project.
This led me to brainstorm an idea about a female intern who was forced by her male colleagues to listen to the frequencies while they went off and got drunk. After hours of just listening to the sounds, she is on the verge of falling asleep when she hears something. She is convinced that that something was an extraterrestrial sound, but no one believes her which causes her to go crazy. It would have had the vibe and aura of Alien (1979), combined with the descent into madness similar to the one Jack Torrance goes through in The Shining (1980). I watched this Youtube video, which sold me even further into the concept of going insane. It is interesting to watch an average character turn into a murderous villain. That is the essence I wanted to try and recreate in this opening.

These images from Alien (1979) showcase the cool, dark tones and sci-fi vision I wanted to recreate.

A favorite scene of mine. It is followed by "I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in!". Iconic. Beautiful. Legendary. (From Pinterest).

It was a vague idea that was up for interpretation but I really liked it. However, my group felt like it would be too trailer-like, and that we could do more. So we decided to work with an idea that my partner Kristen had.
The idea that Kristen has still sticks with the dark theme. It will be about a female witch, dressed as a housewife, torturing some guy in a basement. The plan is to have it set in the 50s/60s. We also wanted to have some happy music from that era that could be eery and outright creepy when paired with the right visuals (Kristen made a playlist, and Zoe found some songs in the public domain). Our mission is to give the audience chills, which is kind of what I wanted to do in the first place. So I'm 100% on board.

I firmly believe in this idea, and I know Kristen's vision, combined with Zoe and I's, will help us make something beautiful. The moral of the story is, I love Kristen, and I trust her.

I am....como se dice....stressed

When my group and I had initially learned about this project months in advance, we wanted to do a fantasy/adventure opening about three young girls of color going on an adventure in the forest. We wanted to do this because we had always seen movies and shows about young boys going on adventures, but never girls. Pieces such as The Goonies (1985) and Stranger Things (2016) focus on a group of boys, most of which are white, solving a mystery; with the help of a girl or two. Our main goal with this would have been to represent both girls and people of color.

The Goonies (1985), image from Annotated MST

However, as time progressed, we decided to scratch that idea. This was decided after our music video project, where we filmed the entire thing outdoors in a park. Because it was outside, there were too many variables we could not control and we did not want to go through that again for our final project. We want this to be perfect. Back to the drawing board.......
